Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund

The Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund (CMIF) provides $1.5 billion over seven years to advance key infrastructure projects that support the growth of Canada’s critical minerals sector and strengthen related supply chains. The program is open to a wide range of partners, including provincial and territorial governments, Crown corporations, public utilities, private companies, non-profits, and Indigenous organizations.

Funding Amount

  • Covers up to 50% of eligible project costs, up to $50 million
    • Up to 75% for projects led by Arctic, Northern, or Indigenous applicants
    Most funding is non-repayable
    • Projects that generate direct profits may be subject to repayment conditions

    Eligible Activities

    The fund supports two main project types:

    • Clean energy infrastructure that improves environmental outcomes and supports critical mineral development
      • Includes generation, transmission, and storage of renewable or alternative energy and grid connectivity
    • Transportation infrastructure that facilitates access to or expansion of critical mineral resources
      • Includes roads, railways, and marine transportation

    Funding streams:

    1. Preconstruction and Project Development
      • Supports early-stage work like planning, studies, and Indigenous engagement
    2. Infrastructure Development
      • Funds shovel-ready initiatives including construction, upgrades, or deployments of infrastructure projects
