Low Carbon Economy Fund

The Low Carbon Economy Fund supports Canadian-led projects that cut greenhouse gas emissions while driving clean economic growth. The program focuses on initiatives that not only reduce carbon pollution but also strengthen community resilience and generate sustainable employment across the country.

Funding Amount

  • Applicants can request between $1M and $25M for eligible expenditures.
  • Cost-sharing requirements vary:
    • 25%: For-profit private sector businesses.
    • 50%: Not-for-profits, public sector boards, provinces, academic institutions, and provincial governments.
    • 75%: Territorial governments and Indigenous recipients.

    Eligible Activities

    Projects must:

    • Result in GHG emissions reductions by 2030 and support Canada's 2050 net-zero targets.
    • Address direct emissions or acquired grid electricity emissions.
    • Go beyond standard regulatory requirements.
    • Deliver tangible, immediate benefits.
    • Involve technologies with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8 or higher.
    • Primarily produce electricity or fuel for own use.

    Applications are evaluated based on:

    • GHG emissions reduced per dollar by 2030
    • Lifetime GHG reductions per dollar
    • Project feasibility and risk
    • Co-benefits (e.g., social, economic, environmental impacts)
