Its primary purpose is to bridge a crucial gap in Alberta's entrepreneurial ecosystem by aiding these SMEs in gaining market traction, a critical indicator of growth potential demonstrated by customer engagement metrics and revenue. The program offers non-dilutive funding up to $50,000 and business coaching to digital SMEs with high growth potential, emphasizing the importance of customer discovery and agile adaptation in product development.

Eligible Applicants

The ideal applicant will have: a minimum viable product (MVP) to test with customers, not previously received Digital Traction funding, performed preliminary customer discovery work to inform the development, a digital technology employed in an innovative way and/or with proprietary features to allow for a competitive advantage over existing solutions, a digital technology that could scale up in one to two years, if successful, no significant capital or regulatory barriers, not addressed by the project, that may be better addressed by other funding resources, completed a lean canvas, business model canvas, or similar tools to demonstrate an understanding of the problem to be solved and the customer profile, and a traction roadmap or similar tool to demonstrate customer acquisition targets for the next three years and what is required to get to those targets.

Eligible Activities

To qualify for funding, all Projects must: Align with the objectives of the Digital Traction Program, Have a Project Start Date at least forty-five (45) days from the application submission date, Have the first milestone activities identified to a maximum of $15,000, Have no more than three defined milestones based on business and technical outcomes to be reached during the project term, Be completed within a one-year term; Comply with other criteria that Alberta Innovates may develop from time to time.

CanExport SMEs

Amount of Funding

Up to 50% funding to a maximum $50,000 grant per project;
Applicants may receive up to 50% of eligible costs for up to $10,000 to $50,000 in grant funding per project;
The applicant is responsible for the remaining 50% of costs;
The annual CanExport contribution maximum is $99,999 (in the event of multiple projects approved in the same government fiscal year);
A group of related companies cannot receive >$200,000 in funding in a single fiscal year. Projects budgets should be between $20,000-100,000; and
Applicants can apply for funding multiple times as long as their prior CanExport application has been completed all reporting is finished.

CanExport SMEs

Eligible Applicants

To be eligible for the CanExport program, Canadian businesses must:

Maintain 1 to <500 full-time employees;
Earn annual revenues ranging from $100,000 to $100,000,000;
Be federally incorporated federally or classified as a limited liability partnership (LLP);
Create eligible project expenses of $20,000 or more; and
Be financially stable and able to pay all project expenses not covered by the program.
