Cellular and Molecular Biology of Complex Brain Disorders (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Grant Title: Cellular and Molecular Biology of Complex Brain Disorders

Grant Description: This grant aims to fund research on the cellular and molecular biology of complex brain disorders. The focus is on understanding the intracellular, transcellular, and circuit substrates of neural function related to high confidence risk factors associated with these disorders. The term "complex" refers to multifactorial contributions to risk and highly distributed functional features of the brain disorder. Studies can be either hypothesis-generating or hypothesis-testing and may utilize in vivo, in situ, or in vitro experimental paradigms. While behavioral paradigms and outcome measures can be incorporated, they are not required. The goal of the research should be to elucidate the neurobiological impact of individual or combined risk factors, including the affected molecular and cellular components and their relationships within defined biological processes. The resulting findings should be disseminated to enrich common and federated data resources and bridge the gap between disease risk factors, biological mechanisms, and therapeutic target identification. This grant specifically seeks R21 applications for high-risk or early-stage exploratory research.
