The program is jointly administered by Canada's three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). CIHR has been designated as the operational lead for the implementation of the program.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must adhere to specific citizenship and institution location guidelines. Non-Canadian citizens or residents must conduct their fellowship at a Canadian institution. Canadian citizens or residents who earned their PhD or equivalent abroad must also undertake their fellowship in Canada. Those who obtained their PhD or equivalent in Canada have the option to hold the fellowship either in Canada or at an international institution. The eligibility window for degree completion is set between September 15, 2020, and September 30, 2024, with all degree requirements fulfilled before the award start date. Applicants still completing degree requirements must provide proof by October 15, 2024. If multiple degrees are held, the eligibility window pertains to the most recent qualification.

Eligible Activities

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant's individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career, and the host institution's commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated. As such, an applicant's application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.

CanExport SMEs

Amount of Funding

Up to 50% funding to a maximum $50,000 grant per project;
Applicants may receive up to 50% of eligible costs for up to $10,000 to $50,000 in grant funding per project;
The applicant is responsible for the remaining 50% of costs;
The annual CanExport contribution maximum is $99,999 (in the event of multiple projects approved in the same government fiscal year);
A group of related companies cannot receive >$200,000 in funding in a single fiscal year. Projects budgets should be between $20,000-100,000; and
Applicants can apply for funding multiple times as long as their prior CanExport application has been completed all reporting is finished.

CanExport SMEs

Eligible Applicants

To be eligible for the CanExport program, Canadian businesses must:

Maintain 1 to <500 full-time employees;
Earn annual revenues ranging from $100,000 to $100,000,000;
Be federally incorporated federally or classified as a limited liability partnership (LLP);
Create eligible project expenses of $20,000 or more; and
Be financially stable and able to pay all project expenses not covered by the program.
