Operating Grant: Data Analysis Using Existing Databases and Cohorts (2023)

  1.  Identify Participants: List all participants in the “Identify Participants” task. Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) remains unchanged between registration and full application phases. Others can be added/removed between stages. All participants (except Collaborators) submit CIHR Registration CV. Use Canadian Common CV confirmation number for all CV submissions.  
  2. Enter Proposal Information: Complete Overview, Details, and Descriptors sections. Research Proposal not needed at this stage.
  3. Complete Summary of Research Proposal: Summarize research proposal within one (1) page. 
  4. Complete Peer Review Administration Information: Suggest suitable Canadian/international reviewers. CIHR selects final reviewers, avoid conflicts of interest.
  5. Apply to Priority Announcements/Funding Pools (Optional). If not applying to research area, avoid selecting pool. If applying to research area(s), choose funding opportunity title and corresponding priority research area(s).
  6. Manage Access (optional): NPA can delegate up to 5 individuals for support. Delegation not carried between stages. Revoke delegate access if needed.
  7. Identify Participants (Again): List all participants in "Identify Participants". Ensure eligibility. All participants (except Collaborators) submit CV. Canadian academics use CIHR Biosketch, others use Applicant Profile CV. For Indigenous, include lived/living experience. Elders/Knowledge Keepers as Collaborators don't need CVs. 
  8. Enter Proposal Information (Again): Research Proposal covers Evaluation Criteria. Structured with headings: Research Question, Research Approach, Impact, Applicant(s). Page limits: English: 5 pages, French: 6 pages.
  9. Complete Summary of Research Proposal (Again): Describe proposal's alignment with objectives and research areas. One (1) page limit. 
  10. Enter Budget Information: Provide budget justification based on planned activities, adhere to specific expenditure limits.
  11. Attach Other Application Materials: Provide data custodian permission letter. Attach Certificate of Completion for SGBA training module. Include Indigenous self-identification/evidence of involvement statement. Describe Applicant Partner roles and conflicts of interest if applicable. Optionally, provide Letters of Collaboration and Collaborators' Applicant Profile CVs. Attach list of up to five (5) relevant publications. 
  12. Complete Peer Review Administration Information (Again): Suggest suitable reviewers, CIHR makes final selection. Avoid conflicts of interest.
  13. Apply to Priority Announcements/Funding Pools (Optional) (Again): Follow instructions as in previous mention.
  14. Manage Access (optional) (Again): Delegate access up to 5 individuals, not carried between stages. Revoke access if necessary.
  15. Print Signature Pages: NPA signature not required for ResearchNet submissions. Include signatures for all except Collaborators and signing authority. Upload scanned signed pages and Routing Slip on ResearchNet.
